It has the sole responsibility of approving the city's budget, and develops laws and policies intended to promote the health and safety of Seattle's residents. The Council passes all legislation related to the city's police, firefighting, parks, libraries, and electricity, water supply, solid waste, and drainage utilities.
Election of city council members occur on odd-numbered years, with at-large seats staggered from district seats. City council members' terms begin January 1 although public ceremonies are held on the following Monday. Like other elections in Washington, all candidates run together in the primary with the top two progressing to the general election.
Candidates may participate in Seattle's unique Democracy voucher program, which provides residents with vouchers to give candidates for public campaign funding. Beginning inthe geographic outline of the 7 districts and 2 citywide positions are as follows.
Seattle was first incorporated as a town by an act of the Territorial Legislature on January 14, The town charter established a five-member board of trustees to govern Seattle, which appointed citizens to other positions.
Seattle was again incorporated, this time as a City, on December 2, The new unicameral legislature, known as the Common Council, was elected at-large to one year terms. The Home Rule Charter, adopted inreorganized the city council into a bicameral legislature, with a nine-member Board of Aldermen and a sixteen-member House of Delegates. InSeattle voters approved Charter Amendment 19 calling for the nine citywide Seattle City Council positions to be divided into seven district-elected seats and two citywide, at-large seats.
This made Seattle's city council among the highest paid in the United States, behind only Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

City Council. The new rules require ride-hailing companies to pay drivers rates high enough to account for a wide range of expenses and for the time drivers spend waiting for rides and heading on their way to pick up passengers, not just the time when a passenger is in the car. As the gig economy surged in recent years, Seattle battled ride-hailing companies Uber and Lyft over pay and rights for their drivers, who are classified as independent contractors and work without basic guarantees like minimum wage.
Drivers have split on City Hall proposals. The new requirements, proposed by Mayor Jenny Durkan and approved by the City Council, met staunch opposition from Uber, Lyft and some drivers who worry the companies could respond as they have to similar rules in New York City.
Uber allowed drivers to go online and drive anytime only if they had given a certain number of rides in the previous month. Other drivers said current practices force them to work long hours for low pay, now with frequent worries about the spread of the coronavirus. The union supported the legislation. The legislation takes effect in January. The pay formula also accounts for 30 minutes each day for vehicle cleaning and 10 minutes of rest for every four hours worked.
The studies relied on different sources of information about drivers, different calculations for time worked and significant differences in assumed expenses.Seattle City Council socialist Kshama Sawant leads tax protest at Amazon Spheres
Today, companies benefit from having more drivers on the road so passengers get picked up faster. But the new formula incentivizes companies to keep that utilization time high when the city calculates its pay rates.
That can mean the companies look for ways to have fewer drivers on the road. Seattle plans to keep its utilization rate in place for the first three years, possibly delaying the effects.Sound of temple bells mp3 download

Those salaries, too, will rise after the next council elections inunder a pay-increase formula the council adopted four years ago.
How Seattle compares 1. Most unionized city employees have received cost-of-living raises of between 2 and 2. Comparisons between Seattle and other large cities can be tricky, since city councils vary in composition and duties. Some are part time, and in many cases, members represent geographic districts or wards.
In Seattle, all nine council members are elected citywide and work full time. Some cities, even large ones, regard their city councils as citizen legislatures and pay only a tiny stipend for the part-time job. Voters last year refused to grant them a pay raise. The pay is higher in cities where the job is considered full time, but most still pay less than Seattle. All of those positions are considered part-time. At that time, the council received raises every four years linked to the cost-of-living adjustments that had been granted to other city employees over the previous four years.
Drago, then the chairwoman of the council finance committee, sponsored a change in the pay-raise formula so it gave council members forward-looking raises based on estimates of inflation in the future, instead of playing catch-up with the past. In San Jose, the city council and mayor over the past four years turned down two pay raises recommended by an independent commission. Political leaders said it would not be right to accept more money when the city was laying off hundreds of employees and freezing the pay of those who remained.
Seattle has also undergone lean budget times over the past four years, cutting back library hours and police positions, but there have been no calls for elected officials to forgo their own raises. I chose this job.

My favorite place was the Blue Lagoon. I went there, twice, The massages were awesome!!. I used Nordic Visitor when I travelled to Iceland for the first time, and it was a wonderful experience. They gave us free passes to the Blue Lagoon for our birthdays, and they also let us change our itinerary after we arrived when we realized we wanted to spend more time with a friend in Reykjavik.
This was at no cost to us. The thing I appreciated most was the fact that they chose hostels for us that were difficult to find in guides, and this made our experience so much better. One hostel we stayed at (Hrifunes) was just a small house on top of a mountain, and I never would have known to stay there, but it was my favorite of all the hostels. I will definitely use Nordic Visitor again in their other locations. I had such a wonderful experience with them.
Nordic Visitor, with Alexandra as our local travel specialist, set up our nine night self-drive tour and thought of everything.16 ragas names in tamil
Our personal taxi driver met us at Keflavik Int'l Airport after an overnight flight from Boston to hand us our travel documents, local cellphone, and give us a guided tour on our way to our Keflavik hotel.
The documents (map, detailed itinerary, highlights of Iceland on our route, useful information, expanded tourist information guidebook, and daily travel vouchers) directed us around the island with ease and were very professionally put together.
The Nordic Visitor arranged rental SUV (SUV allows access to restricted back-country roads) came with a free GPS. The middle level Comfort Accomodations were quite adequate. Alexandra was always there for us: before the trip to relay details and answer e-mail questions, on arrival in Reykjavik to further recommend sights along our route, during the trip if needed via out free cellphone, and at the end of the trip during the extra day that she arranged for us in Reykjavik.
Seattle to require minimum wage for Uber and Lyft drivers
Everything was well organized and complete. We particularly liked having a cell phone for emergencies etc.Tb kart parts
We loved that the route and accommodations were arranged for us. This took a lot of stress out of the trip. We loved Iceland and will consider returning as well as using Nordic visitor for future travel to other destinations. Nordic Visitor was one of the best travel decisions I've ever made.
They made everything so easy, while giving us the freedom of being able to 'adventure' on our own. Our itinerary and maps were comprehensive, with many personal touches from Thordis, our travel agent.
I hope to book another trip with Nordic Visitor again soon. Helena was one of the best travel consultants I have ever worked with. She quickly answered all questions and was a delight to work with. We just returned from our trip and we wanted to tell you thank you.
Everything you planned was wonderful. We loved the tours in Kiruna, especially the dog sledding. The ice hotel was amazing and we loved the room you picked for us. The hotels you picked were very nice and we never would have found them on our own. We liked the Hurtigruten and were so happy when we got to see the Northern lights on the deck on the second night.Nestingworks 2019
We even enjoyed the bus and train rides because the scenery was so beautiful. The guides in Kiruna were especially nice and helped us locate a piece of luggage we lost while we were on a tour so we could make our train on time afterward. Amazing trip, from airport pick-up to drop-off. Alexandra was amazingly helpful. Your country is wonderful. Just wish we had seen the Lights. The attention to detail was wonderful not only from your company but the service providers you use was wonderful.
It made me feel so incredibly special. We enjoyed most parts of the trip and wish we had more time to stay longer. Bergen and Tromso were our favourite especially our Aurora Hunting Tour with Marcus, absolutely spot on. Overall, we had an amazing experience in Norway, couldn't ask for more. Looking forward to another Scandinavian trip and Nordic Visitor is definitely our choice of travel agent. Even though, I couldn't see any northern lights, it was a good experience to visit Iceland. And it was easy to travel there with Nordic Visitor Tour.
I have just returned from a wonderful 12-day Aurora Safari by rail and cruise package arranged by Nordic Visitor, below are some of my comments on this tour: 2. The combination of cruise, train, bus, and flight over 10 days gave me a compress yet varied and comprehensive look into Norwegian life style and land scape. I highly recommend the services of Nordic Visitor to anyone interested in exploring the Scandinavian region.

The Ice Hotel was AMAZING, what a concept. The dogsled from the airport was a fun experience. The Scandic Ferrum for the rest of the stay was fantastic. The staff at both places were exceptional. The snowmobile tour, although eventful, was just a hoot. The most fun we have had in ages. All the meals in all locations were just great and good value. Kiruna is a lovely town and the people are terrific.

A must for something completely different. Everything was organised beyond expectation. Our holiday was exceptionally well organised. Iceland is an amazing country and there is so much to see. It was great to have an itinerary but be able to stray from it if we wanted. Overall, one of the best holidays we've ever had. My goal was to see the Northern Lights and after a lot of research, I landed on using Nordic Visitor Tours to handle arrangements for me and my friend.
I am so glad we did. She was patient when I made changes to our schedule and made excellent recommendations, including for restaurants. We were booked solid for 6 days and 5 nights. We did the 4x4 Jeep tour (loads of fun with Essac.
We stayed at Hotel 1919 and I would highly recommend it. There was a terrific breakfast each morning and the location couldn't be beat.
We saw and experienced so much that my mind was filled with Iceland for days after returning. There are geothermal sites everywhere, black beaches, waterfalls, rainbows, etc.
